Before joining Digital DNA, I used to attend several events a year. And I must admit, convincing the boss it was worthwhile was always the biggest challenge.
Attending events can be a great way to keep up to date with all the latest news and trends within your industry. But for some people, the thought of asking their boss to pick up the bill and approve some time away from the office is just too much.
But with a little bit of help, convincing your boss you really must attend Digital DNA 2017 doesn’t have to be as challenging as you think;
Here are my top 5 tips to convince your boss you really need to attend Digital DNA 2017:
Do your research
Ask any successful salesperson and they will tell you that you must understand your audience before you begin trying to sell to them. The same can be said for convincing your boss that you must attend an event like Digital DNA.
You have to understand what your boss will want to get out of the investment he or she is about to make.
Start by understanding your company’s short-to-medium term goals and look to see how attending will help you contribute to reaching these goals. Are there specific projects you are involved in that, by attending Digital DNA, you will be able to bring fresh ideas to?
Also look at your own personal development plan. Attending events where industry leaders are speaking can sometimes be more cost effective than expensive training courses.
Have a plan
You boss will most likely think “is it really going to be that useful for the business or are you just using it as an excuse to have a couple of days away from the office to enjoy yourself?” (Don’t worry, you will still enjoy yourself!)
Put together an agenda of the talks and studio sessions you want to attend and how they will benefit your personal growth.
More importantly, demonstrate how attending will help you make a positive contribution to the company’s on-going projects and business goals. Many of the speakers at this year’s Digital DNA are experts in their fields and will provide you with actionable takeaways you can put into action as soon as you are back at your desk.
Plan for your absence
The most common objection to you attending an external event is the workload that will back up in your absence. It is your job to ensure your attendance at the event will be as undisruptive as possible. Do not ignore this point; rather build this into your proposal as to how you plan to keep on top of everything while you are away.
Schedule some ‘virtual time’ in your personal agenda for the event to catch-up on emails, work on a specific project important to your boss or dial into an important client conference call.
This year’s Digital DNA event will have plenty of areas where you can sit down, plug in and keep in touch with the office. We will have a dedicated chill out area, networking café and for those who need some extra privacy, an exclusive VIP lounge.
Post event review
Your attendance at this year’s Digital DNA is an investment for your boss, both financially and in your time, so it is important to ensure you demonstrate the value to your company.
Not everyone will be able to attend so offer to share knowledge with the rest of the team by compiling a post event report.
If you decide to attend multiple keynotes and studio sessions, aim to capture 2-3 key points or big ideas from each speaker so you can easily distil into a one-page report on the event.
Here at Digital DNA, we like using programs like Evernote or Google Docs to capture notes but we won’t judge you if you are still using pen and paper.
Invite them along
Ok, so the thought of spending two days with your boss may not fill you with joy but with over 125 speakers, 100+ exhibitors and 2,000+ delegates, there will be plenty to see and do over the two days at St. Georges Market for both of you.
